Healthcare 101

This pre-clinic session will provide an overview of the American health care system and the fundamentals of how public and private insurance works. Through this session, students will establish a baseline working understanding of the core tenants of health care in America and critical programs and concepts. Topics include the basics of the private insurance market, Medicare, and Medicaid; traditional and emerging payment models; a brief overview of the politics of health care policy; and the federal and state infrastructure for administering health care programs. This session will provide the framework that will allow a deeper dive into specific topics in the two clinic seminars. Students who have experience in health care policy may opt out of this session.
