On September 8, 2015, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released proposed regulations implementing Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Section 1557 prohibits discrimination on the ground of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in any health program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance or administered under the ACA. The proposed regulations look to implement civil rights protections in the health insurance field and on the Marketplaces.
CHLPI will be hosting a webinar on the proposed regulations on September 25th at 1 pm EST. This webinar will explain why the regulations are necessary, unpack how the proposed regulations will work, document potential concerns with the regulations, and discuss the potential these regulation have to help people living with HIV as well as other chronic disease communities combat the discriminatory practices increasingly practiced by health insurers as well as other access to care and coverage issues. The webinar will also cover next steps for the HIV and chronic disease communities to combat discrimination including regulatory advocacy and potential litigation.
