Food Policy: Addressing Health Disparities through SNAP

This panel explores current opportunities to use of nutrition programs to address the public health challenges of food insecurity and chronic disease. The panel will first explore nutrition incentive programs, including those associated with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), that work to improve the diets of low-income Americans. It will then examine how to increase the health care finance system’s involvement by looking at reimbursement models for medically tailored meals designed for patients living with serious chronic illness. Finally, the panel will discuss the new legal levers provided by the Affordable Care Act that encourage hospitals to utilize nutrition interventions.

Speakers include Katie Garfield (Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation), Mathew Swinburne (Network for Public Health Law), and Aliza Wasserman (Wholesome Wave).
