Food loss and waste and food insecurity are parallel issues emerging as some of the greatest food system challenges today. While an estimated one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, more than 735 million people around the world are hungry and 11 percent are severely food insecure.
Scaling food donation, which reduces waste and alleviates food insecurity, requires aligned incentives and sensible policy to motivate individuals and companies to donate rather than discard surplus food. Because there are often costs associated with donating food, such as those associated with storing and transporting it to a food recovery organization, government grants can help offset these costs and create the infrastructure necessary to establish long-term food donation practices. Similarly, incentives such as government recognition may encourage businesses to direct safe, unsold food to food banks rather than the landfill. Establishing government grants and incentives can be a powerful tool to influence business behavior and promote more sustainable food systems.
During this dialogue we will hear from representatives in several countries where grants and incentives have been used to spur innovation, create necessary infrastructure, and acknowledge businesses who are creating a positive impact by reducing food waste and hunger. This meeting offers a forum for leading stakeholders to discuss some of the best practices, challenges, and considerations of creating and implementing government grants and incentives.
On behalf of Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic (FLPC) and The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN), you are invited to a webinar on Using Government Grants and Incentives to Reduce Food Waste, the third and final webinar in a series of virtual events highlighting barriers to food donation and the related policy solutions through our joint Global Food Donation Policy Atlas.
