Webinar: Local Policies and Best Practices for Food Waste Reduction

The Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic (FLPC), in collaboration with the Vermont Law and Graduate School’s Center for Agriculture and Food Systems, is launching a brand new toolkit!

“Waste Less, Feed More: A Local Food Waste Policy Toolkit” explores how local governments can strategize, collaborate, and legislate policies to reduce food waste. Of all things that people in the United States throw away, food is the most common material that we send to landfills. 24% of the solid waste in the United States is food waste, and local governments, including both cities and counties, are well-positioned to facilitate solutions.

The FLPC Toolkit outlines how local governments across the United States have utilized their legal authority and their resources to mandate, promote, and support efforts to keep good food from getting discarded. For each type of policy, the Toolkit describes the relevant federal and state policy background, offers a number of best practices, and highlights a local government as a best practices example.

The Toolkit also provides both sample policy language and references to model policies as resources for local governments to utilize in exploring and adopting food waste reduction policies.

This webinar will not just provide an overview of this new FLPC resource but will also host a panel of local government stakeholders and experts discussing how local food waste policies are planned, shaped, and implemented. Don’t miss this informative webinar!
